South African farmers help bring new digital technology to market

Bayer’s Climate FieldView™ platform provides intuitive apps and hardware solutions to maximise impact of precision agriculture.

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Today, The Climate Corporation, Bayer’s digital farming arm, commercially launched its flagship product Climate FieldView™ in South Africa.

FieldView is a global industry-leading digital platform with more than 60 million subscribed hectares around the world. The platform provides easy-to-use tools that help farmers seamlessly collect, visualise and analyse their agronomic data to simplify their farming operations. In 2020, South African farmers tested the FieldView platform on more than 500,000 hectares of maize, soya, wheat and other crops. Following these large-scale trials, the product is now commercially available in the continent for the first time.

FieldView provides farmers with a single platform to unite data from each piece of their precision equipment – including tractors, planters, sprayers and combines - and access it from anywhere using a smartphone, tablet device or computer. One option for connecting field data is through the Climate FieldView™ Drive device, a piece of hardware that farmers can insert into a diagnostic port in the cab of their precision equipment. It uses Bluetooth technology to stream agronomic data from the equipment before being synced with its FieldView account. Farmers can also upload data generated by their equipment directly into their FieldView account through the Data Inbox tool, which does not require the use of the FieldView Drive.

“Farmers have experimented, observed and collected data for thousands of years, but until recently there hasn’t been an easy way to do that,” said Klaus Eckstein, CEO Bayer South Africa. “Advancements in technology are transforming all areas of agriculture. Climate FieldView makes it possible for farmers to analyse performance in each part of their field, extract meaningful insights and make data-driven decisions to have better harvests.”

In addition to providing a suite of easy-to-use data collection and analysis tools, farmers who use FieldView have full control of their data. If they feel it benefits their operation, farmers can choose to share their data with a trusted agronomic partner to help make key decisions, using insights generated from their farm.

“You need to have a good platform to process relevant data into practical information,” said Johan Ferreira, a farmer in Eastern Free State. “Climate FieldView changed our operation tremendously in the way that all this information is centralized.”

FieldView first launched in the United States in 2015 and since its initial launch has seen widespread adoption in regions around the world. For more information, visit www.climatefieldview.co.za.
